ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's tennis team was back in action this weekend when they played host to the Mississippi University for Women Owls and the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx. The Gorloks split their matches as they defeated the Owls by a final score of 9-0 and then fell to the Lynx by a final score of 7-2 to improve to 2-4 on the season.
In their first match of the weekend against the Owls, the Gorloks were able to pick up sweeps in both the doubles and singles portion of the match.
Riley Muren and
Matthew Birchmeier defeated Mikey Duncan and Sam Yarborough in #1 doubles by a final score of 8-1. The Gorloks went on to win the next two doubles matches by scores of 8-0 as
Carson Fisher and
Aaron Demarco defeated Kory Scales and Kris McGowen in #2 doubles while
Andrew McDonald and
Chase Boushard defeated Zavier Minor and Tanner Collins in #3 doubles.
Webster picked up clean sweeps in four of the six singles matches as
Carson Fisher,
Aaron Demarco,
Chase Boushard, and
Andrew McDonald all won their matches by final scores of 6-0 and 6-0. In addition,
Riley Muren won his #1 singles match by final scores of 6-1 and 6-0 while
Matthew Birchmeier won #3 singles by final scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
The Gorloks were swept in their second match of the weekend against the Lynx.
Riley Muren and
Matthew Birchmeier nearly won #1 doubles against Daniel Trudell and David Phillps but fell by a final score of 8-7 after losing the tiebreaker by a final score of 3-0.
Andrew McDonald came close to winning #6 singles but fell to Thomas Ngien. He lost the first game by a final score of 6-1 and then bounced back to win the second game by final score of 6-2. However, he fell in the tie breaker by a final score of 10-8.
The Gorloks are back in action on Sunday, March 13
th when they travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for their spring break trip. They will play two matches on the 13
th including a 9 a.m. EST start against Nazareth (N.Y.) College and a 3 p.m. EST start against Western Connecticut State University.
