ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 8-0 (6 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 10-2 (5 inn.) to improve to 8-9 on the season and 4-2 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Blue Jays fall to 4-14 on the season and 2-4 in the SLIAC.
In the first game of the day, Webster put together 12 hits in the contest. They got on the board in the bottom of the second as they rallied for two runs to take a 2-0 lead. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and rallied from three runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 5-0. The Gorloks pushed their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, and then an RBI single from
Sheldon Underwood in the bottom of the sixth solidified the win.
Reese Waggoner (3-0) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just two hits while striking out three in her second complete game shutout of the season.
Sheldon Underwood led the way at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. In addition to Underwood,
Taylor Jackson finished with two RBI,
Sheyla Iniguez added two RBI, and
Kaelyn Kearney recorded an RBI to round out the top performers for Webster.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second game as they rallied for nine hits in the contest. They got on the board first in this one as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first and a run in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Westminster answered with two runs in the top of the third, but a six-run inning from Webster in the bottom of the fifth solidified the two game sweep.
Sarah Shepard (3-5) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed five hits while striking out two in 3.0 innings.
Arianna Arias came in to relieve Shepard as she allowed one hit while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Paige Thomas,
Jaelin Holdaway, and
Reese Waggoner led the way offensively as they each finished with two RBI in the game. In addition,
Katie Croxall,
Ashlee Seltzer,
Kaelyn Kearney, and
Sheldon Underwood each added an RBI for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, April 12th when they travel down Big Bend to take on the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second to follow.
