ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down Big Bend to take on the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks were swept in the doubleheader as they fell in the first game by a final score of 4-2 and the second game by a final score of 8-0 (5 inn.) to fall to 8-11 on the season. With the sweep, the Bears improve to 22-8 on the year.
In their first game of the day, Webster put together seven hits in the contest. The Bears got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 advantage. The Gorloks broke into the scoring column in the top of the fifth when Sydney Holtz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 2-1. They tied the score in the top of the fifth, but two runs from the Bears in the bottom half of the frame proved to be the difference in the game.
Reese Waggoner (3-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out two in 4.2 innings.
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as she allowed just one hit while striking out one in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Sheyla Iniguez and
Jaelin Holdaway led the way at the plate as they both finished with two hits in the game. In addition,
Sheldon Underwood went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Sidney Holtz went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Gorloks put together six hits in the second game of the day. After two scoreless innings, the Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the third, one run in the bottom of the fourth, and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the sweep.
Sarah Shepard (3-6) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking out three in 4.1 innings.
Arianna Arias and
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as the two combined to allow two hits and two earned runs in the final 0.1 innings of the game.
Sheyla Iniguez led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-3 in the game. In addition,
Lucy St. John,
Katie Croxall,
Sidney Holtz, and
Emma Steltzer each added a hit.
The Gorloks return to the field on Friday, April 15
th when they play host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second to follow at St. Joseph's Academy.
