Gorloks Sweep Spalding in SLIAC Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 5-4 and the second game by a final score of 7-3 to improve to 10-11 on the season and 6-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the sweep, Spalding falls to 13-11 on the year and 7-3 in conference play.

Webster put together seven hits in the first game of the day. They got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Arianna Arias hit an RBI double to put Webster up 1-0. They added a run in the top of the second, but four runs from Spalding over the next three innings put the Golden Eagles up 4-2 late in the game. The Gorloks retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Arianna Arias hit a three-run homerun, and then they closed out Spalding down the stretch to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (4-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in 6.1 innings. Sarah Shepard picked up the save as she recorded a strikeout in the final 0.2 innings.

Arianna Arias led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with four RBI. In addition, Sheyla Iniguez, Katie Croxall, Ashlee Seltzer, Jaelin Holdaway, and Taylor Jackson all added hits in the game.

The Gorloks kept the bats rolling in the second game as they finished with 10 hits. The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the top of the first when they scored a run to go up 1-0. The Gorloks answered with an RBI single from Paige Thomas in the bottom half of the inning, and then scored a second run on an RBI double from Alyssa Lyell in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 advantage. Spalding retook the lead with a two-run rally in the top of the second, but a five-run bottom of the third proved to be the difference for Webster.

Sarah Shepard (4-6) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in 6.0 innings. Braidyn Burr came in to pitch the final inning as she struck out one.

Alyssa Lyell and Taylor Jackson led the way for Webster as they both finished with two RBI in the game. In addition, Sheyla Iniguez, Paige Thomas, and Kaelyn Kearney each added an RBI.

The Gorloks are back in action on Saturday, April 16th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureak (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second to follow.
