EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University softball team was back on the diamond this afternoon when they traveled to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 5-3 and won the second game by a final score of 18-5 to improve to 11-12 on the season and 7-3 in the SLIAC. With the split, Eureka falls to 10-17 on the year and 5-5 in conference play.
The Gorloks put together six hits in the first game of the day. Eureka got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Webster responded with a run in the top of the third, but three runs from the Red Devils in the bottom of the third and a run in the bottom of the fourth put them up 5-1 in the contest. Webster scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but Eureka picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Reese Waggoner (4-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out five in 3.1 innings.
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as she allowed three hits while striking out one in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Sheyla Iniguez led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-4 in the game. In addition,
Ashlee Seltzer went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
Alyssa Lyell added an RBI.
In the second game of the day, the Gorloks offense exploded for 15 hits in the contest. They got on the board first as they scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Eureka answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, but a run in the top of the third, six runs in the top of the fourth, and three runs in the top of the fifth put Webster up 11-2. Eureka answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but seven runs over the final two innings solidified the win for Webster.
Sarah Shepard (5-6) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed two earned runs in the first inning.
Arianna Arias came in to relieve Shepard as she allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 4.1 innings.
Reese Waggoner pitcher the final 2.2 innings for Webster allowing just two hits and an earned run.
Ashlee Seltzer led the way for Webster at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with five RBI.
Sheyla Iniguez and
Paige Thomas both had nice games as Iniguez went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Thomas went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two-run homerun. In addition,
Katie Croxall finished with two RBI,
Taylor Jackson added an RBI, and
Emma Steltzer had an RBI.
The Gorloks return to the field on Monday, April 18
th when they host Greenville (Ill.) University for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second to follow at St. Joseph's Academy.
