ELSAH, Ill. – This afternoon the 12
th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 16-5 and the second game by a final score of 10-0 to improve to 21-5 on the season and 9-2 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Panthers fall to 2-16 on the season and 0-8 in conference play.
Webster put together 14 hits in the first game of the day. They got on the board first in the top of the second as they scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. They continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and rallied for 12 runs in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the fifth to take a 16-0 advantage. The Panthers battled back and scored five runs in the final three innings, but the damage was done as the Gorloks picked up the final outs to solidify the win.
Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he struck out five while not allowing a hit in the first four innings of the game.
Parker Wielt (1-0) picked up the win as he allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out two in 1.0 inning.
Sebastian Barrera,
Joel Arsenault, and
Scott Detweiler also pitched in relief as the three combined to allow three hits and four earned runs while striking out four in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Adam Lovell,
Austin Jisa, and
R.J. LaRocco led the way at the plate as they each finished with two hits and three RBI. In addition,
Aron Hopp,
Bo Slaymaker,
Evan Evola,
Parker Wielt,
Nathaniel Martinez, and
Matt Staker each added an RBI.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second game and put together 13 hits in the contest.
Parker Wielt got the Gorloks on the scoreboard in the top of the first when he hit a two-run double to put Webster up 2-0.
Evan Evola and
R.J. LaRocco added to the Gorloks lead as they both hit homeruns over the next few innings. Evola hit a three-run homerun in the top of the third and LaRocco hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to put Webster up 9-0.
Mitch Daniels finished off the scoring for Webster as he scored on a wild pitch to solidify the win.
J.T. Miller (1-0) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed three hits while striking out 11 in 5.0 innings.
Alek Elges and
Bobby Strandt pitched in relief as the two combined to allow just one hit while striking out six in the final 3.0 innings of the game. The 17 total strikeouts is tied for the fourth most in program history in a single game.
R.J. LaRocco led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with four RBI. In addition,
Evan Evola went 1-for-3 with three RBI,
Parker Wielt went 1-for-3 with two RBI, and
Ben Swords went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The baseball team returns to the field on Friday, April 22
nd when they travel across town to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins. The Gorloks will play one game on the day starting at 12:30 p.m. at Shaw Park in Clayton, Missouri.
