Kurich Wins 500th Career Game

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 11th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled across town to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 15-4 to improve to 22-5 on the season and 10-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Fontbonne falls to 21-9 on the year and 13-2 in conference play.

This win marks number 500 for Webster University Head Baseball Coach, Bill Kurich. In 16 seasons with the Gorloks, Kurich has accumulated an overall record of 500-187 (.728) and a 294-40 (.880) record in conference play. He has been named the SLIAC Coach of the Year eight times while leading the team to 14 straight SLIAC Regular Season Titles, nine SLIAC Tournament Titles, and four NCAA Division III College World Series appearances.

The Gorloks bats were rolling in this one as they exploded for 19 hits in the contest. They got on the board first in the top of the first innings as they rallied for three runs, including a two-run homerun from Evan Evola, to put Webster up 3-0 in the game. The Gorloks added a run in the top of the second, but a run from the Griffins in the bottom of the frame cut Websters lead to 4-1 in the contest. The Gorloks continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed and extended their lead 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Fontbonne cut the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but five runs from Webster over the next three innings, including a two-run homerun from Ben Swords, put the Gorloks up 12-3. The Griffins added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but a three run double from Matt Staker in the bottom of the ninth solidified the win.

Jordan Smevoll (5-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out seven in his second complete game of the season.

Ben Swords, Evan Evola, and Matt Staker all led the way at the plate as they each recorded three RBI in the contest. In addition, Adam Lovell went 3-for-5 with an RBI, R.J. LaRocca went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with an RBI, A.J. Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Malik Wirges added an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks will be back in action on Saturday, April 23rd when they play the final two game of the three game SLIAC series. The doubleheader is set to start at 3 p.m. at Shaw Park in Clayton, Missouri.
