FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 13-9 and the second game by a final score of 7-3 to improve to 17-14 on the season and 12-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the sweep, Westminster falls to 10-20 on the season and 8-10 in SLIAC play.
Webster put together 15 hits in the first game of the doubleheader. They got on the board in the top of the first when
Paige Thomas hit a two-run homerun to put Webster up 2-0 early in the game. They added four runs in the top of the second and held a 6-0 advantage through two innings of play. Westminster answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but three runs from the Gorloks in the top of the fourth put them up 9-1 in the game. The Blue Jays scored three runs over the next two innings, but four runs from Webster in the top of the seventh put them up 13-4 late in the contest. Westminster scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Webster picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Reese Waggoner (7-3) got the start in this one as she allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out three in 3.2 innings.
Sarah Shepard and
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as the two allowed six hits and seven earned runs while striking out one in the final 3.1 innings of the game.
Arianna Arias led the way at the plate as she went 1-for-1 with a three-run homerun. In addition,
Ashlee Seltzer went 2-for-2 with two RBI,
Paige Thomas went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun, and
Kaelyn Kearney went 2-for-4 with two RBI while
Katie Croxall,
Jaelin Holdaway,
Sheyla Iniguez, and
Lucy St. John each added an RBI.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second game and put together nine hits in the contest. The Gorloks got on the board first in the top of the first when
Sheldon Underwood hit her first homerun of the season to put Webster up 2-0. Westminster answered with a run in each of the next two innings, but an RBI single from
Jaelin Holdaway in the top of the third put Webster up 3-2 in the game. Westminster added a run in the bottom of the third, but a four-run rally from the Gorloks in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference in the game.
Braidyn Burr (2-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed seven hits and three earned runs in 2.0 innings.
Reese Waggoner pitched in relief as she allowed five hits while striking out two in the final 5.0 innings of the game.
Paige Thomas led the way at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a grand slam. In addition,
Sheldon Underwood went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun and
Jaelin Holdaway added an RBI.
The Gorloks will play their final doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday, April 30
th when they host Principia (Ill.) College for a SLIAC doubleheader. This game will serve as Senior Day for the softball team and prior to the start of the game we will honor the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the softball program. The first game is set to start at noon with the second to follow.
