Gorloks Season Ends in Regionals

ALTON, Ill. – The Alton Regional wrapped up the second day of play this evening with a night cap featuring the Webster (Mo.) University Gorloks and the College of Wooster (Ohio) Fighting Scots. The Fighting Scots defeated the Gorloks by a final score of 4-3 to advance to the championship game of the Alton Regional.
Webster finished the game with five hits while Wooster finished the game with six. There were not any errors in the contest.

It was a pitching duel to start this one as neither side was able to get anything going through first four innings of the game. Ben Swords broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth when he hit a two-run double to put the Gorloks up 2-0 in the game. Webster added a third run in the inning on an RBI groundout from Evan Evola and Webster took a 3-0 advantage.

After only recording one hit through the first five innings of the game, Wooster broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth when Tyler Chumita hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. They added a run in the bottom of the seventh and found themselves trailing 3-2 late in the contest.

The Fighting Scots threatened with runners in scoring position in each of the last two innings but did not score a run until Ben Hines hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth to solidify the win.

Carter Hunt was the starting pitcher for Webster in this one as he allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out five in 5.2 innings. Ben Kowalski (10-2) pitched in relief as he allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out four in the final 2.2 innings of the game.

Ben Swords led the way at the plate for Webster as he went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Evan Evola also added an RBI for the Gorloks.

This marks the end of the season for the Gorloks. They finished the year with a 38-8 overall record. They won their 15th straight SLIAC Regular Season Title and their fourth straight SLIAC Tournament Championship. The team will return to the field next spring.
