Men’s Tennis Season Ends With 5-1 Defeat

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's tennis team was back on the court this morning when they traveled to Edwardsville, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers in the SLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 5-1 to fall to 9-10 on the season. With the win, the Panthers will advance to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in the championship match.

The Gorloks started off the match by dropping two out of three in doubles. Riley Muren and Matthew Birchmeier were defeated by Daniel Gomez and Juan Segovia by a final score of 8-4 in #1 doubles. Carson Fisher and Tanner Haugen were defeated in #2 doubles by William Johnson and Rafter Sprague by a final score of 8-3. Aaron Demarco and Chase Boushard picked up the only point for Webster in the match as they defeated Elliot Mathiesen and Everett Poznick by a final score of 8-5 in #3 doubles.

The Panthers went on to win three singles matches to solidify the win. Carson Fisher fell in #2 singles by final scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Matthew Birchmeier fell in #3 singles by final scores of 4-6, 6-1, and 6-0. Lastly, Tanner Haugen fell in #4 singles by final scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

Riley Muren nearly defeated Daniel Gomez in #1 singles but the match went unfinished in the third game. He fell in the first game by a final score of 2-6 before bouncing back to win the second game by a final score of 7-5. The match ended in the third game with Daniel Gomez up 2-1. In #5 singles, Aaron Demarco found himself trailing in the first game by a score of 5-3 before the match was deemed unfinished. Lastly, Andrew McDonald and Everett Poznick did not begin #6 singles.

This marks the end of the Gorloks men's tennis season. They ended the year with a 9-10 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The team will return to the court in the spring.
