ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's tennis team was back in action today when they competed in the SLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament. The Gorloks fell in their semifinal matchup to Greenville (Ill.) University by a final score of 5-4 but then bounced back to defeat Westminster by a final score of 9-0 in the third place game. With the split, the Gorloks improve to 14-11 on the year.
The Gorloks got the match started off against Greenville by taking two out of three in doubles.
Erin Brezovar and
Bailey Higgins defeated Mireia Birosta and Addison Brannon in #1 doubles by a final score of 8-6.
Maddie Mena and
Emily Casey defeated Callie Adkins and Sarah Brannon by a final score of 8-7 in #3 doubles.
Emma Ferguson and
Kylie Chitwood were unable to complete the doubles sweep as they fell by a final score of 8-5 in #2 doubles.
Webster did not fair as well in the singles portion of the match as they went 2-4.
Erin Brezovar won #1 singles as she defeated Mireia Birosta by final scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
Maddie Mena picked up the other win for the Gorloks as she defeated Emily Buratovich by final scores of 6-3 and 6-0. In addition,
Emma Ferguson fell in #2 doubles by final scores of 7-5 and 6-2,
Bailey Higgins fell in #3 singles by final scores of 6-2 and 7-5,
Kylie Chitwood dropped #4 singles by final scores of 6-2, 4-6, and 6-3, and
Emily Casey fell in #6 singles by final scores of 6-2 and 7-5.
Webster bounced back to sweep Westminster in their second match of the day. They won all three doubles matches as
Erin Brezovar and
Bailey Higgins won #1 doubles by a final score of 8-2,
Maddie Mena and
Emma Ferguson won #2 doubles by a final score of 8-1, and
Kylie Chitwood and
Chloe Daughtry won #3 doubles by forfeit.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the singles portion of the match to complete the sweep.
Erin Brezovar won #1 singles over Erika Watanabe by final scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
Emma Ferguson defeated Rebecca Zile in #2 singles by final scores of 6-2, 2-6, and 10-3.
Emily Casey won #3 singles over Elena Thomas-Dietz by final scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Chloe Daughtry took #4 singles over Izabelle Smith by final scores of 6-2 and 6-2. Lastly,
Kylie Chitwood won #5 singles and
Maddie Mena won #6 singles by forfeit.
This marks the end of the scheduled matches for the 2021-22 Webster University women's tennis season. They finished the year with a 14-11 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the SLIAC. They will wait to see if they have qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championships when the field is announced later this week.
