ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled across town to take on the University of Health Science and Pharmacy in St. Louis (Mo.). The Gorloks defeated the Eutectics in five sets (16-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-17, 15-8) to improve to 2-0 on the season. With the loss, the Eutectics fall to 1-5 on the year.
The Gorloks finished the match with 57 kills on 189 attacks for a .164 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, eight blocks, 53 assists, and 98 digs. The Eutectics finished with 50 kills and a .094 attacking percentage in the match.
Webster came out in the first set of the match and found themselves trailing 5-1 early. They battled back and cut the lead to one, but a 9-0 run from the Eutectics put them up 23-13 late in the set. Webster scored three of the games next five points, but the Eutectics were able to pick up the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Eutectics carried over their momentum into the second set and started the game on a 6-3 run. Webster responded with a 10-3 run of their own and held a 13-9 advantage midway through the set. The game went back and forth over the next few points, but with the score tied at 18 the Gorloks went on a 7-4 run to tie the match at one.
After dropping a closely contested third set by a final score of 27-25, the Gorloks came out in the fourth set and jumped out to a 6-4 lead. They continued to play well as the set progressed and pushed their lead to 17-7 midway through the game. Webster was able to close out the Eutectics down the stretch to tie the match at two and force a fifth game.
The Gorloks dominated the fifth set. They opened up the set on a 7-1 run and never let the Eutectics back in the game as they closed them out to solidify their second straight five set victory.
Lauren Borik led the way for Webster as she finished with a match high 20 kills and 12 digs.
Ellie Biedenstein and
Emma Leppien did a good job of running the offense as Beidenstein tallied a team high 30 assists while Leppien added 17. Beidenstein also finished with 13 digs.
Cassie Gray led the team defensively as she recorded a match high 31 digs. In addition,
Tyler Ramstack finished with 14 digs and
Abby Jacobs added 12 kills.
The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, September 14
th when they travel to Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) for a nonconference matchup. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
