ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back on the court this evening when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to sweep the Red Devils in three straight sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-21) to improve to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. With the loss, Eureka falls to 5-8 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.
Webster finished the match with 48 kills on 129 attacks for a .240 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, three blocks, 45 assists, and 69 digs. The Red Devils finished with 29 kills on 129 attacks for a .116 attacking percentage.
The Gorloks got off to a good start in the first set of the match as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Red Devils battled back and took a 14-13 lead midway through the set, but an 8-3 run from the Gorloks put them up 21-17 in the game. Eureka cut the lead down to two, but Webster was able to close them out down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead the match.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second set and jumped out to a 9-5 advantage. They pushed their lead to 17-12 and then ended the set on an 8-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Webster found themselves trailing 9-14. They battled back and were able to go on an 8-2 run to take a 17-16 lead in the set. The Gorloks continued to play well down the final stretch and were able to end the game on an 8-5 run to solidify the match.
Madison Katz and
Kaylee Portell led the attack for Webster as Katz finished with a match high 11 kills while Portell added 10. Katz also added 15 digs.
Emma Leppien and
Delaney Demman ran the offense for Webster as Leppien recorded a match high 23 assists while Demman added 15.
Cassie Gray and
Taylor Thompson led the way defensively as Gray finished with a team high 17 digs while Thompson added 16.
The Gorloks are back in action on Thursday, September 29
th when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. EST.
