ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for their annual Dig Pink Match. The Gorloks swept the Red Devils in three sets (25-12, 25-12, 25-20) to improve to 10-9 on the season and 8-1 in conference play. With the loss, Eureka drops to 3-12 on the year and 2-8 in the SLIAC.
During the match, the volleyball team raised money for the Side-Out Foundation through donations, a 50/50 raffle, a basket auction, and a few fun games. All the proceeds will go to the fight against breast cancer.
The Gorloks finished the match with 39 kills on 111 attacks for a .225 attacking percentage. They added nine service aces, 37 assists, 44 digs, and six blocks. The Red Devils finished the match with 20 kills on 97 attacks for a -.041 attacking percentage.
In the first set of the match, Webster came out and found themselves trailing 7-5 early in the game. They battled back and answered with a 12-2 run to take a 17-9 lead midway through the set. They continued to play well down the final stretch of the set and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Webster carried their momentum over into the set and jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead. They grew their lead to 18-12 late in the game and then ended the frame on a 7-0 run to take a 2-0 match advantage.
In the third set, both sides came out and exchanged points early. The Red Devils were able to gain a slight advantage and held a 12-10 lead midway through the game. Webster tied the score at 14 and then went on a 11-6 run to end the set to solidify their seventh straight win.
Tyler Ramstack,
Olivia Powell, and
Megan Zablonski led the attack for the Gorloks as all three finished with eight kills.
Delaney Demman and
Ellie Biedenstein ran the offense for Webster as Demman finished with a match high 17 assists while Biedenstein finished with 15.
Lauren Borik led the team defensively with 12 digs.
Webster will return to the court on Saturday, October 14
th when they travel to Columbia, Mississippi, to compete in a SLIAC tri-match hosted by Mississippi University for Women. The Gorloks will play Fontbonne (Mo.) University at 12 p.m. and Mississippi University for Women at 2 p.m.
