ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 1-0 to improve to 4-7-3 on the season and 2-1-2 in SLIAC play. With the loss, the Griffins move to 7-5-2 on the year and 5-1 in the conference.
The Gorloks outshot the Griffins 13-8 in the game and put eight shots on target compared to three from Fontbonne. Webster also led in the corner count as they had seven while the Griffins finished with two.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and controlled the possession early. They created a couple scoring chances in the period including a shot off the post from
Carlos Llamas but were unable to capitalize. They kept the Griffins out of the back of the net and the game remained scoreless at the break.
In the second half, the Gorloks were able to get on the board just six minutes into the period when
Talha Dizdarevic beat a couple Fontbonne defenders before placing his shot in the bottom left corner for his seventh tally of the season. The Griffins turned up the pressure in the final 39 minutes of the game but the Gorloks stood strong and held them off down the stretch to solidify the win.
Luke Dillon (4-7-3) was the starting keeper for Webster in this one as he recorded three saves in the contest.
The Gorloks will return to the field on Tuesday, October 17
th when they host the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers in a make-up game from earlier this season. The game will start at 4:30 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
