Gorloks Remain at the Top of the SLIAC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they played host the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a matchup of the top two teams in the SLIAC standings. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 1-0 to improve to 8-3-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Griffins drop to 5-7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The Gorloks were outshot 13-12 in the game and put three shots on target compared to five from Fontbonne. Fontbonne also led in the corner count as they had nine while Webster did not have any.

Webster came out in the first half of the game and had a tough time keeping possession. The Griffins did well to keep the ball but were only able to create one dangerous chance in the half. The Gorloks settled in as the half progressed and were able to take advantage of their one opportunity in the period as Jennifer Munger found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 39th minute of the game. Grace Rodgers had the assist, her fourth of the year. The Gorloks tried to get a second before the break but would ultimately take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

In the second half of the game, Fontbonne came out and turned up the pressure. They created several scoring chances throughout the half but were unable to capitalize as the Gorloks backline stood their ground and kept the Griffins out of the back of the net. Webster was able to hold them off down the stretch to solidify their eighth win of the season.

Courtney Haneline (8-3-1) was the keeper for Webster in this one as she recorded five saves in her sixth solo shutout of the season.

The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 21st when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
