Gorloks Drop Road Exhibition to Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled down the road to take the on the Maryville (Mo.) University Saints for an exhibition game. The Gorloks were defeated by Maryville, an NCAA DII institution, by a final score of 83-51. With the win, the Saints improve to 1-0 on the year.

Webster went 19-for-54 (35.2%) from the floor and 6-for-25 (24.0%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 37-29 and pulled down 11 offensive boards. They dished out eight assists while forcing the Saints to turn the ball over seven times.

Webster came out in the first half of the game and stuck with the Saints early in the contest. The Saints picked it up as the half progressed and went on a 20-6 run to take a 31-17 lead with 4:45 to play in the half. The Saints would continue to play well down the final stretch of the half and would take a 41-24 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks came out in the second half hit a three pointer early in the period to cut the lead to 14. Maryville answered with a 19-9 run over the next few minutes and held a 24 point advantage midway through the half. Webster would cut the lead back down to 18 but that was as close as they would get as the Saints closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

Markus Becton led the way offensively for Webster as he finished with a team high 10 points. Alpha Diallo and Josh Luster also played well as Diallo finished with nine points and five rebounds while Luster recorded eight points and three rebounds. Jemard Sykes II led the Gorloks with six rebounds.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 18th when they host the Willamette (Wash.) University Bearcats for their first game of the 2023 Webster Tip-off Classic. The game is set to start at 8 p.m.
