ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Maryville (Tenn.) College Scots for their final game of the 2023 Webster Tip-Off Classic. The Gorloks were defeated by the Scots by a final score of 77-54 to drop to 1-2 on the season. With the win, Maryville improves to 3-2 on the season.
The Gorloks went 19-for-60 (31.7%) from the field and 4-for-22 (18.2%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 43-35 in the contest and pulled down 14 rebounds on the offensive end. They forced eight turnovers in the contest while dishing out nine assists.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and had a tough time getting anything going early as they found themselves trailing 10-4 five minutes into the game. The Gorloks would cut the lead to three, but a 22-3 run from Maryville gave them 32-10 lead with just over five minutes to play in the period. The Gorloks would cut the lead to 19 late in the period but the Scots would take a 41-21 lead into the locker room.
The Scots came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to 25. Webster would battle back and cut the lead to 16, but another run from the Scots put them up 20 late in the contest. The Gorloks tried their best to get back into the game, but the Scots held them off down the stretch to solidify the win.
Nate Jones led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Jemard Sykes II also played well as he finished with seven points and a team high 10 rebounds. In addition,
Josh Luster and
Markus Becton each recorded eight points in the game.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, the all-tournament team was announced. For their efforts,
Markus Becton and
Jemard Sykes II were recognized along with Caleb Moore (Willamette), Brennan Jeffries (Westminster), Chase Morgan (Maryville), and Jose Rodriguez (Maryville). Rodriguez was also named the tournament MVP.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, November 21
st when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for their first SLIAC contest of the season. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
