ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action today when they traveled to Pattonville High School to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in the SLIAC Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals. The fourth seeded Gorloks defeated the top seeded Griffins by a final score of 2-0 to advance to the SLIAC Men's Soccer Championship Final. With the loss, the Griffins season ends with a 10-6-3 overall record.
Webster was outshot 20-7 in the game and put four shots on target compared to 12 from the Griffins. Fontbonne also led in the corner count as they had five while Webster had two.
It did not take long for Webster to get on the board in this one as they were able to find the back of the net in the 7
th minute of the game.
Carlos Llamas had the goal for Webster as he received the ball in the middle of the field before hitting a shot from distance that bounced over the Fontbonne keeper and into the back of the net. The Griffins picked it up after the goal and forced
Luke Dillon to make five saves in the period, but the Gorloks stood up to the test and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Fontbonne carried over their pressure into the second half and forced the Gorloks to play defensively throughout most of the period.
Luke Dillon continued to play well in the half and was able to make seven saves in the frame.
Talha Dizdarevic added a second goal for the Gorloks in the 77
th minute off a pass from
Chase Boushard and Webster held off the Griffins down the stretch to solidify their spot in the final.
Luke Dillon (8-9-3) was fantastic in goal tonight for Webster as he recorded a career high 12 saves in his fifth solo shutout of the season.
The Gorloks have earned a spot in the SLIAC Men's Soccer Championship Final. They will take on the third seeded Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers on Saturday, November 4
th in Greenville, Illinois, at 5 p.m.
