Gorloks Advance to SLIAC Semifinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team kicked off postseason play this evening when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for the SLIAC Volleyball Quarterfinals. The fourth seeded Gorloks defeated the fifth seeded Golden Eagles in four sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17) to advance to the SLIAC Volleyball Semifinals. With the loss, the Golden Eagles season ends with a 12-18 overall record.

The Gorloks finished with 52 kills on 143 attacks for a .273 attacking percentage. They added seven service aces, 11 total blocks, 49 assists, and 77 digs. The Golden Eagles recorded 47 kills on 163 attacks for a .135 attacking percentage.

The Gorloks came out in the first set of the match and jumped out to an early 11-6 lead. Spalding battled back and cut the lead to three, but a 7-2 run from the Gorloks put them up 20-12 late in the game. Webster would play well down the final stretch of the set and cruised to a 1-0 match advantage.

After dropping the second set 25-21, Webster came out in the third set and matched the Golden Eagles point-for-point. With the score tied at six, the Gorloks went on a 9-4 run and held a 15-10 lead midway through the game. Webster would extend their lead out to as many as seven and closed out the Golden Eagles down the stretch to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Webster carried over their momentum into the fourth set and jumped out to a 9-6 lead. Spalding bounced back to cut the lead to one, but a 5-1 run from Webster put them up 16-11 midway through the frame. The Gorloks would extend their lead to as many as eight down the stretch and cruised to their 16th win of the season.

Alyssa Jones led the attack for Webster as she recorded a team high 10 kills. Ellie Biedenstein and Delaney Demman ran the offense for Webster as Biedenstein recorded a team high 27 assists while Demman added 13. Biedenstein and Demman also added double digit digs as they recorded 12 and 10, respectively. Lauren Borik led the way defensively with a team high 16 digs while Madison Katz added 14.

Webster will advance to the SLIAC Volleyball Semifinals where they will take on the top seeded Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers on Saturday, November 11th. The game will take place in Greenville, Illinois, at 2 p.m.
