MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Webster University softball team was back on the diamond today for a doubleheader in Memphis, Tennessee. The Gorloks were swept in the doubleheader as they fell to the Transylvania (Ky.) University Pioneers by a final score of 3-2 and to the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx by a final score of 8-0 to fall to 0-4 on the season.
In their first game of the day, Transylvania got on the board first as they scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. They added a run in the bottom of the fourth and held a 2-0 advantage heading into the fifth. Webster got their bats going in the fifth as
Jaelin Holdaway hit an RBI double and
Katie Croxall hit an RBI single in back-to-back at-bats to tie the score at two. The game remained tied over the next couple of innings, but the Pioneers scored in with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth to solidify the win.
Kaley Adzick (0-1) was the starting pitcher for the Gorloks as she allowed six hits while striking out five in her first career complete game.
Jaelin Holdaway and
Katie Croxall led the way offensively for Webster as they both recorded two hits and an RBI. Holdaway also scored a run while
Aven Ragwar-Hayes went 1-for-1 with a run scored.
The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going in their second game of the day as they were held to just four hits in the contest. The Lynx scored three runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the bottom of the second, and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to solidify the win.
Ainsley Hinz (0-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out one in 3.0 innings.
Reese Waggoner pitched in relief as she allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out one in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Katie Croxall led the way for the Gorloks at the plate as she went 2-for-3 in the game.
Jaelin Holdaway and
Jonelle Coertze each finished with one hit.
The Gorloks return to the diamond on Saturday, February 25
th when they compete in the Fontbonne Invitational. Webster will play two games on the day including a 1 p.m. start against the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) and a 3 p.m. start against Central (Iowa) College. The games will take place in Ellisville, Missouri, at the Ellisville Athletic Association.
