Gorloks Win SLIAC Regular Season Title

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for their final game of the regular season. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 94-59 to improve to 13-12 on the season and 10-4 in the SLIAC. With the loss, the Blue Jays drop to 2-23 on the year and 1-13 in the conference.

With the win today, the Webster University men's basketball team has clinched the SLIAC Men's Basketball Regular Season Title and the top seed in the SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament. This marks the Gorloks 11th SLIAC Regular Season Title and their first since the 2019-20 season. The championship marks the 101st SLIAC Championship for the Webster Department of Athletics.

Prior to the start of the game, the four seniors on the men's basketball team were honored for their hard work and dedication to the program. Wynne Brown Jr., Javane Nugent, Stephen Hawkins, and Zion Henderson were all recognized.

Webster went 36-for-79 (45.6%) from the floor and 25-for-69 (36.2%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Blue Jays by a final count of 58-34 with 22 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Westminster to turn the ball over 11 times and turned those turnovers into 12 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 44 of their 94 points in the paint and dished out 19 assists.

The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 12-7 in the first five minutes. They quickly tied the score at 12, and then went on a 10-2 run to give themselves a 22-14 lead midway through the half. The Blue Jays cut the lead back down to two over the next few minutes, but a 21-10 run from the Gorloks down the final stretch of the half would give Webster a 43-30 lead at the break.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second half and went on a 19-4 run in over the first six minutes to push their lead to 28. The Blue Jays would cut the lead down to 24 with five minutes left, but the Gorloks would close them out down the stretch to solidify their 11th SLIAC Regular Season Title in program history.

Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 27 points. Karl Moore Jr. also had a huge game as he finished with 14 points and a game high 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. In addition, Jason Coleman finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Javane Nugent and Markus Becton each grabbed eight rebounds.

The Gorloks have earned a bye in the first round of the SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament. They will host the lowest remaining seed after Wednesday's quarterfinal games on Friday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
