ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Blue Jays by a final score of 79-69 to fall to 22-3 on the season and 12-2 in conference play. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 16-9 on the season and 10-4 in the SLIAC.
Prior to the start of the game, the two seniors on the women's basketball team were honored for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Julie Baudendistel and
Emily Kuntze were both honored.
Webster went 26-for-68 (38.2%) from the floor and 4-for-22 (18.2%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Blue Jays by a final count of 43-42 with 20 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Westminster to turn the ball over 24 times and turned those turnovers into 20 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 30 of their 69 points in the paint and dished out 16 assists.
The Gorloks got off to a quick start in the first quarter of the game as they opened the period with a 7-2 run. The Blue Jays battled back and tied the score at eight, but a 10-7 run from the Gorloks gave them a 18-15 advantage heading into the second. The Blue Jays picked it up to start the second and opened the quarter on a 21-7 run to take a 36-25 lead late in the half. Webster cut the lead to ten, but another run from Westminster to end the half gave the Blue Jays a 45-31 lead at the break.
Webster picked it up to start the third quarter and went on a 15-9 run through the first six minutes of the period to cut the lead to 55-46. The Blue Jays ended the period on an 11-7 run and took a 66-53 advantage into the final frame. Webster turned up the pressure in the fourth and were able to cut the lead to six, but the Blue Jays were able to close them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Bethany Lancaster led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Emily Wilson and
Claire Williams also finished in double figures as Wilson finished with 12 points and a team high four assists while Williams added 10 points.
Julie Baudendistel led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Gorloks have clinched the top seed in the SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament and have earned the right to host. They have earned a bye in the first round of the tournament and will play the lowest remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinals on Thursday, February 23
rd at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
