BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The #13 Webster University baseball team kicked off their season this evening when they traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on the Depauw (Ind.) University Tigers in the Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) College Classic. The Gorloks defeated the Tigers by a final score of 16-5 to improve to 1-0 on the season. With the loss, Depauw falls to 1-2 on the year.
The Gorloks put together eight hits in the contest. They got on the board first in this one as they took advantage of a few defensive mistakes from the Tigers to give themselves a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. They added three more runs in the top of the fourth and held a 6-0 advantage midway through the game. Depauw cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but two runs from the Gorloks in the top of fifth, five runs in the top of the seventh, and three runs in the top of the ninth would give Webster a 16-1 lead heading into the final half inning. The Tigers would rally for four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Webster would pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Alek Elges (1-0) had an outstanding outing in his first game of the season as he allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out six in 6.0 innings pitched.

Ryan LaPlante, and
Mason Young pitched in relief of Elges as the four combined to allow three hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters.
Parker Wielt led the way for the Gorloks at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI.
Malik Wirges,
R.J. LaRocco,
Nathaniel Martinez,
Charlie Burton,
Zach Goodman,
Nate Mosqueda, and
Simon Griffin all recorded an RBI in the contest while Wirges, Goodman, and
Evan Evola each recorded two runs scored.
The Gorloks will continue play in the Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) College Classic tomorrow, February 25
th when they take on the Adrian (Mich.) College Bulldogs. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.
