ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Red Devils by a final score of 90-64 to improve to 20-2 on the season and 10-1 in SLIAC play. With the loss the Red Devils fall to 6-16 on the year and 3-8 in the conference.
The win today marks the fourth time in six seasons that the Gorloks have reached the 20-win milestone under Head Coach
Jordan Olufson. Prior to Olufson taking over the program in 2008, the women's basketball team had only two seasons where they won 20 or more games.
The Gorloks went 33-for-59 (55.9%) from the floor and 6-for-10 (60.0%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Red Devils by a final count of 31-29 and pulled down nine rebounds on the offensive end. They forced the Red Devils to turn the ball over 29 times in the contest while turning those turnovers into 37 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks dished out 21 assists and scored 48 of their 90 points in the paint.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and jumped out to an early 15-6 lead in the first six minutes of the game. They continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and ended the period on a 10-4 run to take a 23-10 lead into the second. The Red Devils scored the first basket of the second, but a 12-7 run from Webster would extend their lead to 16 late in the half. Eureka would score on their next possession, but a three pointer from
Julie Diveney at the end of the half gave Webster a 38-21 lead at the break.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second half and started the third quarter on 21-6 run to extend their lead to 32 midway through the frame. The Red Devils cut the lead to 27, but Webster would take a 69-42 lead into the final frame. The Gorloks would extend their lead back out to 31 in the fourth and cruised to their eighth straight win.
Julie Baudendistel led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 24 points and a team high seven rebounds.
Kate Rolfes and
Emily Wilson also finished in double figures as Rolfes finished with 18 points and Wilson finished with 12.
Nysa Gilchrist led the team with five assists.
The Gorloks return to the court on Saturday, February 11
th when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
