Gorloks Compete in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they continued play in the Tucson Invitational. The Gorloks dropped both games of their doubleheader as they were defeated by Dickinson (Pa.) College by a final score of 15-13 (8 inn.) before falling to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a final score of 6-3. Webster moves to 1-11 on the season.

In their first game of the day, the Gorloks put together 15 hits in the contest. The Red Devils got on the board first in this one as they scored three runs in the top of the first, three runs in the top of the second, and two runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead midway through the contest. The Gorloks answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth and then exploded for 11 runs over the next two innings to take a 12-8 lead in the game. The Red Devils retook the lead in the top of the sixth, but an RBI double from Kaelyn Kearney in the bottom of the seventh would send the game to extras. Dickinson would score two runs in the top of the seventh and pick up the final three outs of the game to solidify the win.

Ainsley Hinz was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed three hits and one earned run. Emma Steltzer and Kaley Adzick (0-6) pitched in relief as they combined to allow 15 hits and five earned runs in the final 8.0 innings of the contest.

Reese Waggoner led the way at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Jaelin Holdaway, Madi Stichling, Kaelyn Kearney, and Kaley Adzick all had nice games as well as each finished with two hits and two RBI. In addition, Katie Croxall went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Gorloks put together seven hits in their second game of the day. After two scoreless innings, the Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the third as they scored two runs to take 2-0 lead. The Gorloks answered back in the top of the fourth as Kaelyn Kearney and Sidney Holtz hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the score at two. The Gorloks took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth after an RBI single from Madi Stichling, but four runs over the next two innings would solidify the win for UW-La Crosse.

Cheyenne Dickens (0-1) was the starting pitcher for the Gorloks as she allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out three in 4.0 innings. Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as she allowed four hits and two earned runs in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Kaelyn Kearney and Madi Stichling led the way at the plate as they each recorded two hits and an RBI. In addition, Sidney Holtz went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the field tomorrow, March 15th when they continue play in the Tucson Invitational. Webster will play a doubleheader including an 11 a.m. PST start against Coe (Iowa) College and a 1:30 p.m. PST start against Concordia (Wis.) University.
