CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Webster University baseball was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Claremont, California, to take on Pamona-Pitzer (Calif.) for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Sagehen's by a final score of 6-5 to improve to 5-6 on the season. With the loss, Pamono-Pitzer falls to 8-10 on the season.
Webster put together 12 hits in the contest. They got on the board in the top of the first as
Evan Evola launched his second homerun of the season to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. They added a run in each of the next two innings to extend their lead to 3-0, and then a solo homerun from
Nathaniel Martinez (2) in the top of the fourth would give Webster a 4-0 lead in the game. Webster would extend the lead to 5-0 after a solo homerun from
Charlie Burton in the top of the eighth, but three runs in the bottom of the eighth from the Sagehen's would cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the ninth.
Evan Evola would launch his second homerun of the game in the top of the ninth and the Gorloks would take a 6-3 lead into the final half inning. Pamona-Pitzer threatened with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Webster would pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Alek Elges (2-1) was on the mound for Webster to start the game as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out three in 7.2 innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched in relief of Elges as he allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out two in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Evan Evola led the way at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with two homeruns and three runs scored.
Parker Wielt and
Nathaniel Martinez also finished with multi-hit games as Wielt went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Martinez went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun. In addition,
Charlie Burton went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a solo homerun.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Friday, March 17
th when they travel to Laverne, California, to take on the University of Laverne (Calif.) for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. PST.
