Gorloks Take Series Against Spalding

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team wrapped up their three-game series against Spalding (Ky.) University this afternoon at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 9-1 to improve to 8-8 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding drops to 12-5 on the year and 1-2 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks put together nine hits in the contest. After four scoreless innings, Spalding got on the board in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Webster answered back with a sacrifice fly from Parker Wielt in the bottom of the sixth and the score remained tied over the next couple of innings. With the score tied in the eighth, Webster's bats came alive as they rallied for eight runs, including a three run double from Ben Swords, to give themselves a 9-1 advantage heading into the ninth. The Gorloks were able to pick up the final three outs in the top of the ninth and solidify the series win.

Carter Hunt was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out three in 5.0 innings on the mound. Deven Shulstad (2-0) pitched in relief as he allowed just four hits while striking out six in four scoreless innings.

Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Malik Wirges also had a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In addition, Ben Swords went 1-for-4 with three RBI, Zach Goodman added an RBI, and Nate Mosqueda went 1-for-1 with two RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 1st when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for the first two games of a three-game SLIAC series. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
