Gorloks Win Third Straight

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks won the first game of the doubleheader by a final score of 20-8 and then were leading in the top of the ninth by a score of 10-4 in the second game before the game was stopped due to sunlight. The second game will resume tomorrow prior to the final game of the series. With the win, Webster improves to 9-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

The Gorloks put together a season high 29 hits in the contest. The Beavers got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the third to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Webster's bats came alive in the fourth as they rallied for five runs in the top of the fourth, a run in the top of the fifth, and three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-2 lead. The Beavers would cut the lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth, but a four-run rally from the Gorloks in the top of the seventh gave Webster a 13-4 advantage. The Beavers would answer with two runs in each of the next two innings, but seven runs from the Gorloks in the top of the ninth would solidify their third straight win.

Alek Elges (3-1) was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed nine hits and six earned runs while striking out nine in 6.1 innings. Jack Mackert and Shane LeJeune-DeAcutis pitched in relief as the two combined to allow two hits and two earned runs while striking out three in the final 2.2 innings of the game.

The Gorloks had three players record five hits in the contest including R.J. LaRocco, Malik Wirges, and Nathaniel Martinez. LaRocco went 5-for-6 with an RBI and four runs scored. Wirges went 5-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. Martinez went 5-for-6 with two homeruns and six RBI. In addition, Zach Goodman went 2-for-6 with a homerun and five RBI while Ben Swords finished with three RBI and Parker Wielt added two.

The Gorloks are back in action tomorrow, April 3rd when they complete the three-game series against Blackburn. They will finish tonight's second game first and then play the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
