Gorloks Sweep Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to wrap up their three-game series against the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers. The Gorloks picked up two wins on the day as they won the first game by a final score of 11-4 and the second game by a final score of 13-3 to improve to 11-8 on the season and 5-1 in SLIAC play.

After getting suspended due to sunlight in the ninth inning yesterday, the Gorloks were able to finish off the Beavers this afternoon to improve to 10-8 on the season. They got on the board early and often as they scored a run in the top of the first, two runs in the top of the second, and a run in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Beavers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but a solo homerun from R.J. LaRocco (3) in the top of the sixth extended the Gorloks lead to 5-1. Blackburn would rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but six runs from Webster in the final two innings would solidify the win.

Jordan Smevoll (1-1) got the start on the mound as he allowed 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out four in 6.1 innings. Ben Kowalski and Adam Hill pitched in relief as the two combined to allow two hits while striking out five in the final 2.2 innings of the game.

In addition, Malik Wirges went 2-for-4 with four RBI, Charlie Burton went 3-for-4, and Parker Wielt went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Webster rallied for 16 hits in their second game of the day. They got off to a quick start as they rallied for three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Beavers answered back in the bottom of the frame and tied the score at three heading into the second. The game remained tied over the next three innings, but four runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth, and five runs in the seventh solidified the series sweep for the Gorloks.

Adam Hill (1-1) was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed just two hits and two earned runs while striking out 14 in his first complete game of the season.

Nathaniel Martinez led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. Parker Wielt also played well as he went 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun (5).
