Evola Homerun Lifts Gorloks Past Eagles

SAUGET, Ill. – The #17 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to Benedictine (Ill.) University Eagles for their second game of the Webster Classic. The Gorloks defeated the Eagles by a final score of 4-3 to improve to 2-3 on the season. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 3-2 on the year.

The Gorloks put together six hits in the win. The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the first as they rallied for two runs to take an early lead. The Gorloks cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first off an RBI single from Nathaniel Martinez, but another run from the Eagles in the top of the second put them up 3-1 in the contest. Neither side was able to get anything going offensively over the next few innings, but a three-run homerun from Evan Evola in the bottom of the seventh gave the Gorloks a 4-3 lead late in the contest. Webster would hold off the Eagles in the final two innings and solidify their second win of the season.

Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out six in 5.1 innings on the mound. Joel Arsenault (1-0) pitched in relief of Smevoll as he allowed just one hit while striking out five in 3.2 scoreless innings.

Evan Evola led the way at the plate for Webster as he went 1-for-4 with a three-run homerun to give the Gorloks the lead in the seventh. Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Sam Turilli went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with a run scored to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will continue play in the Webster Classic tomorrow, March 6th when they host the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
