Gorloks Drop Close Game

SAUGET, Ill. – The #17 Webster University baseball team wrapped up play in the Webster Classic this afternoon when they took on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by UW-Oshkosh by a final score of 5-4 to fall to 2-4 on the season. With the loss, the Titans drop to 4-1 on the year.

The Gorloks put together eight hits in the contest. Parker Wielt got the Gorloks on the board in the bottom of the first when he hit an RBI double to give Webster an early 1-0 lead. Nathaniel Martinez added to the Gorloks lead in the bottom of the fourth when he hit a two-run homerun to give Webster a 3-0 advantage. The Titans rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth and then tied the score at three in the top of the sixth. Webster broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth, but two runs from the Titans in the top of ninth solidified the win for UW-Oshkosh.

Carter Hunt was the starting pitcher for the Gorloks as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out six in 4.2 innings. Ben Kowalski (0-1) and Deven Shulstad pitched in relief of Hunt as the two combined to allow three hits and two earned runs while striking out four in the final 4.1 innings of the game.

Nathaniel Martinez led the way at the plate for Webster as he went 2-for-3 with a two-run homerun. In addition, Parker Wielt went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Evan Evola went 2-for-4 to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Friday, March 10th when they travel to Orange, California, to take on Chapman (Calif.) University for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PST.
