FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the Blue Jays as they won the first game by a final score of 5-4 and the second game by a final score of 13-0 (5 inn.) to improve to 7-14 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. The Blue Jays fall to 2-24 on the year and 2-3 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going to start the first game as they found themselves trailing 3-0 through the first three innings. Webster's bats came alive in the fourth as
Reese Waggoner hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 3-1. The Gorloks tied the game with a two run single from
Madi Stichling in the top of the fifth, and then scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Westminster would cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Gorloks would pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Cheyenne Dickens got the start in this one as she allowed three hits and three earned runs without recording an out.
Kaley Adzick (1-7) pitched in relief as she allowed 11 hits while striking out six in seven innings.
Webster rallied for 12 hits in the contest.
Kaley Adzick and
Katie Croxall led the way as Adzick went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Croxall went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Reese Waggoner and
Paige Thomas also recorded multi-hit games as Waggoner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Thomas went 2-for-4. In addition,
Madi Stichling went 1-for-3 with three RBI and
Kaelyn Kearney recorded an RBI.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second game of the day as they rallied for eight runs through the first three innings to take an early lead. Webster scored five more runs in the top of the fourth, including a three-run homerun from
Jaelin Holdaway (3), and held off the Blue Jays down the stretch to solidify the sweep.
Reese Waggoner (2-1) pitched a great game for the Gorloks as she allowed just one hit while striking out five in her second complete game of the season.
Webster put together 15 hits in their second game of the day.
Jaelin Holdaway led the way at the plate as she went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a three-run homerun.
Madi Stichling,
Kaelyn Kearney, and
Sidney Holtz each recorded multi-hit games as Stichling went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Kearney went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Holtz went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Additionally,
Paige Thomas went 1-for-3 with two RBI while
Kaley Adzick added an RBI and two runs scored.
The Gorloks return to the field on Friday, April 14
th when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) Fightin' Engineers for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 4 p.m. EST with the second game to follow.
