Gorloks Sweep Beavers in SLIAC Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 7-1 and the second game by a final score of 11-3 (6 inn.) to improve to 4-13 on the season and 2-0 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Beavers fall to 5-7 on the season and season and 0-2 in the conference.

The Gorloks put together 12 hits in the first game of the day. After going down a run in the top of the first, the Gorloks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at one. Webster continued to put the ball in play in the bottom of the second and rallied for four runs in the inning to give themselves a 5-1 lead. The Gorloks added a run in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the bottom of the sixth to solidify their second straight win.

Reese Waggoner (1-1) was in the circle for the Gorloks as she allowed just seven hits and one earned run while striking out eight in her first complete game of the season.

Madi Stichling led the way at the plate as she went 3-for-4 in the contest. Katie Croxall and Paige Thomas also had great games at the plate as Croxall went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Thomas went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In addition, Jaelin Holdaway, Kaley Adzick, and Aven Ragwar-Hayes each added an RBI.

In their second game of the day, Webster finished with a season high 19 hits. They got on the board first in the bottom of the first when they rallied for two runs to take an early lead. The Beavers battled back and answered with three runs of own in top of the second, but another run from the Gorloks in the bottom of the second tied the score at three. The Gorloks would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Jaelin Holdaway, and then would rally for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to win their third straight.

Ainsley Hinz was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just one hit and one earned run while striking out one in 1.2 innings. Cheyenne Dickens (1-2) pitched in relief as she allowed just one hit while striking out three in 4.1 scoreless innings.

Jaelin Holdaway led the way at the plate as she went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored. Kaley Adzick, Paige Thomas, Katie Croxall, Sidney Holtz, and Emma Bovaconti also recorded multi-hit games with all six recording at least one RBI as well.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 8th when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The doubleheader will take place at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Academy.
