SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for the final game of a three-game series. The Gorloks completed the three-game sweep as they defeated the Griffins by a final score of 14-4 in seven innings to improve to 20-12 on the year and 12-3 in the SLIAC. With the loss, the Griffins drop to 22-12 on the season and 10-5 in the conference.
After finding themselves down 1-0 in the top of the first, the Gorloks bounced back in the bottom half of the inning as they rallied for five runs, including a three-run homerun from
Charlie Burton, to give themselves a 5-1 lead. They added a sixth run in the bottom of the second, but two runs from the Griffins in the top of the third cut the lead to 6-3. Webster would rally for five more runs in the bottom of the third and held an 11-3 lead midway through the game. Fontbonne would bring a run around to score in the top of the fifth, but three runs over the next two innings would solidify the win for the Gorloks.
Adam Hill was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed two hits and an earned run while striking out one in 0.1 innings.
Deven Shulstad (4-1),
Caleb Zbrozek,
Quinn Weber, and
J.T. Miller pitched in relief as the four combined to allow eight hits and two earned runs while striking out three in the final 6.2 innings of the game.
Webster tallied 12 hits in the contest.
Charlie Burton led the way for Webster as he went 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun (5) and four RBI.
R.J. LaRocco also had a big day at the plate as he went 2-for-2 with two RBI. In addition,
Evan Evola went 1-for-2 with two RBI while
Parker Wielt,
Malik Wirges,
Nathaniel Martinez,
Zach Goodman,
Ben Swords, and
Matt Staker each added an RBI.
The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, April 26
th when they travel down Big Bend to take on the Washington (Mo.) University Bears. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
