ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down Big Bend Road to take on the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks, who were ranked in the first Region VIII poll that was released this morning, defeated the Bears by a final score of 1-0 to improve to 21-12 on the year. With the loss, the Bears drop to 25-13 on the year.
It was a pitching dual in this one as neither side was able to get anything going through the first seven innings of the game. Webster was finally able to break into the scoring column in the top of the eighth as
Evan Evola hit an RBI double to score
Mitch Daniels and give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks would close out the Bears in the final two innings and solidify their fifth straight win.
Ben Kowalski (2-3) was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed just five hits while striking out six in 6.0 scoreless innings.
Alek Elges picked up his first save of the season as he allowed just one hit while striking out one in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
The Gorloks were held to just four hits in the contest.
Parker Wielt recorded two of those hits as he went 2-for-4 in the game. In addition,
Evan Evola went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Ben Swords went 1-for-4.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Friday, April 28
th when they host the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
