Gorloks Improve to 13-3 in the SLIAC

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for the first game of a three-game SLIAC series. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 12-2 (7 inn.) to improve to 22-12 on the season and 13-3 in the SLIAC. With the loss, Principia drops to 3-22 on the year and 1-15 in the conference.

The Panthers came out in the top of the first inning and rallied for two runs to take an early lead. The Gorloks answered back in the bottom of the second as Nathaniel Martinez and Charlie Burton both blasted their sixth homeruns of the season to tie the score at two. The Gorloks took their first lead in the game in the bottom of the fourth as they rallied for six runs, including a grand slam from Evan Evola (8), to give themselves an 8-2 lead in the game. Webster would extend their lead to 12-2 after a grand slam from Malik Wirges in the bottom of the fourth, and then closed out the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning to solidify the win.

J.T. Miller was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed one hit and two runs while striking out two in 3.1 innings. Joel Arsenault (6-1) and Scott Detweiler pitched in relief as the two combined to strikeout six while not allowing a hit in the final 3.2 innings of the game.

Webster rallied for 11 hits in the contest. Evan Evola and Malik Wirges both led the way for Webster as Evola went 2-for-4 with a grand slam while Wirges went 1-for-4 with a gram slam. In addition, Charlie Burton went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and two RBI, Nathaniel Martinez went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun, and Mitch Daniels went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond tomorrow, April 29th when they host the Panthers for the final two games of the three-game series. The doubleheader will serve as Senior Day for the Gorloks and prior to the start of the first game we will honor the nine seniors on the team. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
