Gorloks Sweep Red Devils

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 8-0 (5 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 9-2 to improve to 13-16 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.

In their first game of the day, neither side was able to get anything going through the first two innings of the game. Webster got on the board in the bottom of the third as Paige Thomas hit an RBI double to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. Webster kept the Red Devils off the board over the next couple of innings and then scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (5-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just four hits while striking out six in her second complete game shutout of the season.

The Gorloks tallied eight hits in the contest. Paige Thomas led the way as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Jaelin Holdaway also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI. In addition, Reese Waggoner went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Madi Stichling and Sidney Holtz each added an RBI.

Webster carried over their momentum into the second game as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The Red Devils would cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third, but a sacrifice fly from Kaelyn Kearney in the bottom of the fifth would give Webster a 4-2 lead in the game. The Gorloks would rally for five runs in the bottom of the sixth and close out the Red Devils in the final half inning to solidify the sweep.

Ainsley Hinz (3-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out two in 6.0 innings pitched. Cheyenne Dickens pitched in relief as she allowed one hit while striking out one in the final inning of the game.

Webster rallied for 13 hits in the contest. Jaelin Holdaway and Paige Thomas both recorded three hit games as Holdaway went 3-for-4 with four RBI while Thomas went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Kaelyn Kearney and Sidney Holtz also recorded multi-hit games as Kearney went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Holtz went 2-for-3 with a run scored. In addition, Katie Croxall went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Kaley Adzick went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Ainsley Hinz went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 25th when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 4 p.m. with the second game to follow.
