ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 20-1 (5 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 12-4 (6 inn.) to improve to 16-17 on the season and 10-4 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Blue Jays drop to 3-31 on the year and 3-10 in the conference.
The Gorloks came out in the first game and poured it on the Blue Jays early as they rallied for 12 runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks continued to put the ball in play as the game progressed as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 15-0. The Blue Jays got on the board in the top of the fourth, but five runs from Webster in the bottom half of the inning solidified the win for the Gorloks.
Kaley Adzick (5-8) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just two hits in 2.0 scoreless innings.
Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as she allowed three hits and an earned run while striking out two in 3.0 innings.
Webster rallied for 20 hits in the game.
Paige Thomas and
Madi Stichling led the way at the plate as Thomas went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Stichling went 2-for-2 with four RBI. In addition,
Jaelin Holdaway went 3-for-5 with three RBI,
Kaley Adzick went 2-for-2 with a two-run homerun (2),
Reese Waggoner went 1-for-1 with two RBI,
Sidney Holtz went 1-for-2 with three RBI,
Cheyenne Dickens went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and
Alyssa Lyell went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Westminster bounced back to start the second game as they scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks responded with four runs, including a solo homerun from
Kaley Adzick (3), in the bottom of the first and held a 4-2 advantage heading into the second.
Reese Waggoner would extend the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the second as she drove in three runs with her first homerun of the season. Webster would add three more runs in the bottom of the third, but two runs from the Blue Jays in the top of the fifth would cut the lead to 10-4. The Gorloks would score a run in each of the next two innings and solidify the sweep.
Reese Waggoner (6-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out two in 4.0 innings.
Cheyenne Dickens pitched in relief as she allowed three hits in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Webster recorded 16 hits in the game.
Reese Waggoner led the way as she went 3-for-4 with a three-run homerun.
Kaley Adzick and
Katie Croxall also recorded two RBI as Adzick went 2-for-4 with a solo homerun and Croxall went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In addition,
Sidney Holtz went 2-for-4 with an RBI,
Lucy St. John went 2-for-4 with an RBI,
Alyssa Lyell went 1-for-2 with an RBI,
Jaelin Holdaway went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and
Paige Thomas went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Gorloks return to the field on Sunday, April 30
th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The teams will play just one game on the day with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
