Gorloks Take Game One in Eureka Series

EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Eureka, Illinois, for the first game of a three-game series against Eureka (Ill.) College. The Gorloks defeated the Red Devils by a final score of 8-1 to improve to 12-10 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. With the loss, Eureka drops to 6-15 on the season and 4-6 in the SLIAC.

Webster put together 14 hits in the contest. They got on the board first in the top of the second when Charlie Burton hit his third homerun of the season to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead. Webster added a run in the top of the fourth, four runs in the top of the eighth, and a run in the top of the ninth to take an 8-0 lead into the final half inning. The Red Devils were able to bring their first run across in the bottom of the ninth but that was as close as they would get as the Gorloks picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Alek Elges (4-1) pitched a great game for Webster as he allowed just four hits while striking out nine in his first complete game of the season.

Matt Staker led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Nathaniel Martinez also had a nice game as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. In addition, R.J. LaRocco went 1-for-5 with an RBI, Charlie Burton went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun, and Ben Swords went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond tomorrow, April 8th when they play the final two games of the three-game series against the Red Devils in Eureka, Illinois. The first game is set to start at noon with the second game to follow.
