EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for the final two games of a three-game series. The Gorloks completed the three-game series sweep as they won the first game by a final score of 13-2 (7 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 12-0 (7 inn.) to improve to 14-10 on the season and 8-1 in the SLIAC. With the sweep, the Red Devils drop to 6-17 on the year and 4-8 in the conference.
Webster put together 11 hits in their first game of the day. The Gorloks took the lead early in this one as they rallied for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Nathaniel Martinez would extend the lead to 5-0 with a two-run homerun (5) in the top of the third, and then an RBI double from
Parker Wielt would push the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. Eureka would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but seven runs from the Gorloks over the next two innings would solidify the win for Webster.
Jordan Smevoll (2-1) was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed nine hits and two earned runs while striking out six in 5.0 innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched in relief as he allowed just one hit in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Malik Wirges,
Nathaniel Martinez, and
Matt Staker also had nice games as they all went 1-for-3 with two RBI. In addition,
Evan Evola went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun (5),
Zach Goodman went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and
Dylan Coleman added an RBI.
In their second game of the day, Webster recorded nine hits. After five scoreless innings, the Gorloks were finally able to get on the board in the top of the sixth as they rallied for four runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead. Webster then exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh, capped off with a three-run homerun from
Mitch Daniels (1), to solidify the series sweep.
Adam Hill (2-1) was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed just two hits while striking out seven in his first complete game shutout of the season.
Charlie Burton led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Matt Staker and
Evan Evola also had multi-hit games as Evola went 2-for-4 with an RBI while
Matt Staker went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. In addition,
Mitch Daniels went 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun wiole
Ben Swords added two RBI.
The Gorloks are back home on Tuesday, April 11
th when they host the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
