SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Fightin' Engineers by a final score of 10-2 to improve to 15-10 on the season. With the loss, Rose-Hulman drops to 15-8 on the year.
The Gorloks put together 13 hits in the contest. After finding themselves down 1-0 in the top of the second, the Gorloks bounced back in the bottom of the frame as
Charlie Burton hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score at one. Rose-Hulman would retake the lead in the top of the third, but a run in the bottom of the third and two runs in the bottom of the fifth would give Webster a 4-2 lead midway through the game. The Gorloks would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth, a run in the bottom of the seventh, and three runs in the bottom of the eighth to solidify their fourth straight win.
Deven Shulstad (3-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out six in 5.1 innings on the mound.
Ben Kowalski and
Caleb Zbrozek pitched in relief as the two combined to allow three hits while striking out five in 3.2 scoreless innings.
Charlie Burton led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Malik Wirges and
Evan Evola also recorded multi-hit games as Wirges went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Evola went 2-for-5 with two RBI. In addition,
Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Gorloks will return to the field on Saturday, April 15
th when they host the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for the first two game of a three game SLIAC series. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
