SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action over the weekend as they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a three game SLIAC series. The Gorloks took one out of the three games as they won the first game by a final score of 7-3, lost the second game by a final score of 10-8, and lost the third game by a final score of 7-1 to move to 16-12 on the season and 9-3 in conference play.
The Blue Jays got off to a fast start in the first game of the series as they rallied for three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Webster answered back with a run in the bottom of the second and then rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. The Gorloks would add two more runs in the fourth and a run in the sixth to solidify the win.
Alek Elges was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Ben Kowalski (1-3),
Caleb Zbrozek, and
Parker Wielt pitched in relief as the three combined to allow six hits while striking out two in 7.1 scoreless innings.
Webster rallied for 14 hits in the contest.
Evan Evola led the way at the plate as he went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun (6).
Caleb Zbrozek hit his first homerun of the season as he went 1-for-2 with an RBI. In addition,
Matt Staker went 2-for-3 with an RBI,
Parker Wielt went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and
Malik Wirges went 3-for-5.
In the second game, the Gorloks were able to get on the board first as
Nathaniel Martinez hit an RBI double to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the top of the second, but two runs in the third and three runs in the fifth gave the Gorloks a 6-1 advantage. Westminster cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth, but another run from the Gorloks extended their lead to 7-2 heading into the seventh. The Blue Jays bats came alive in the seventh as they rallied for eight runs in the final three innings to give themselves a 10-7 lead. Webster would score a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Westminster was able to pick up the final outs of the game to tie the series.
Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight in 6.1 innings pitched.
Joel Arsenault (3-1) pitched in relief as he allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out two in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
Webster finished with 14 hits in the game.
R.J. LaRocco led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with a two-run homerun (4) and three runs scored.
Mitch Daniels also had a nice game as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI. In addition,
Parker Wielt went 1-for-2 with an RBI,
Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and
Ben Swords went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
In the final game of the series, the Blue Jays got on the board first as they scored four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. An RBI single from
Mitch Daniels would cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth, but three more runs in the sixth would solidify the series win for Westminster.
Adam Hill (2-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed two hits and two earned runs in 2.0 innings.
J.T. Miller,
Mason Young, and
Sam Turilli pitched in relief as the three combined to allow four hits and three earned runs while striking one in the final 6.0 innings of the game.
Webster was held to just five hits in the contest.
Parker Wielt led the way as he went 2-for-3 in the game.
Mitch Daniels recorded the lone RBI as he went 1-for-3.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, April 18
th when they travel to Decatur, Illinois, to take on Millikin (Ill.) University. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
