Gorloks Outlast Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Decatur, Illinois, to take on Millikin (Ill.) University for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Big Blue by a final score of 7-6 (10 inn.) to improve to 17-12 on the season. With the loss, Millikin drops to 21-10 on the year.

The Gorloks got off to a great start in this one as they rallied for three runs in the top of the second to take an early lead. The Big Blue answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 advantage, but an RBI single from Evan Evola in the top of the fifth would tie the score at four. Millikin would retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the Gorloks would take advantage of a Big Blue error in the top of the eighth to tie the score at five. Webster would break the tie with two runs in the top of the 10th and held a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the frame. Millikin would cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the 10th, but Webster picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Deven Shulstad was the starting pitcher for Webster as he allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out four in 2.1 innings. J.T. Miller, Alek Elges, and Joel Arsenault (4-1) pitched the next 6.2 innings in relief as the three combined to allow two hits while striking out 10. Ben Kowalski recorded his first save of the season as he allowed three hits while striking out three in the final inning of the game.  

The Gorloks finished with 10 hits in the contest. Evan Evola, Parker Wielt, and Ben Swords all recorded multi-hit games as Evola went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Wielt went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Swords went 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition, Mitch Daniels went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Caleb Zbrozek went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Zach Goodman added an RBI.

The Gorloks will return home on Saturday, April 22nd when they host the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for the first two games of a three-game SLIAC series. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second to follow at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
