SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for the first two games of a three game SLIAC series. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 9-4 and the second game by a final score of 6-5 to improve to 19-12 on the season and 11-3 in SLIAC play. With the split, Fontbonne moved to 22-11 on the season and 10-4 in conference play.
The Gorloks got off to a great start in the first game of the day as 
Evan Evola blasted his seventh homerun of the season in the top of the first to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Griffins bounced back with a run in the top of the third and four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead in the game. The Gorloks were able to tie the game in the top of the sixth, and then a solo homerun from 
Charlie Burton (4) and an RBI double from 
Matt Staker in the bottom of the seventh gave Webster a 6-4 lead in the game. Webster would score three more runs in the bottom of the eighth and close out the Griffins in the final half innings to solidify the win.
Alek Elges was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out five in 3.1 innings. 
Joel Arsenault (5-1) pitched in relief as he allowed just one hit while striking out four in 5.2 scoreless innings.
Webster recorded 13 hits in the contest. 
Charlie Burton led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 
Evan Evola, 
Dylan Coleman, 
Ben Swords, and 
Matt Staker also recorded multi-hit games as Evola went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Coleman went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Swords went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Staker went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In addition, 
Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Webster got off to another great start in their second game of the day as they rallied for two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. The Griffins cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, but an RBI single from 
Malik Wirges in the bottom of the fifth would extend the Gorloks lead to 3-1 heading into the sixth. Fontbonne would cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth, but three runs in the bottom of the sixth would extend the Gorloks lead to 6-2 late in the game. Fontbonne would score three runs over the next two innings, but 
Ben Kowalski would shut down the Griffins in the ninth to solidify his second save of the season.
Jordan Smevoll (4-0) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out four in 6.2 innings. 
Deven Shulstad, 
Adam Hill, and 
Ben Kowalski pitched in relief as the three combined to allow four hits and one earned run while striking out one in the final 2.1 innings of the game.
Webster tallied 12 hits in the game. 
Matt Staker led the way for the Gorloks as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI. In addition, 
Malik Wirges went 2-for-4 with two RBI, 
Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-4 with an RBI, 
Evan Evola went 1-for-5 with an RBI, 
R.J. LaRocco went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and 
Parker Wielt went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Gorloks will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow, April 23
rd when they host Fontbonne (Mo.) University at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
