O'FALLON, Mo. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to O'Fallon, Missouri, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for their first game of the SLIAC Baseball Tournament. The top seeded Gorloks defeated the sixth seeded Red Devils by final score of 20-1 to improve to 29-12 on the year. With the loss, the Red Devils will play in an elimination game tomorrow.
The Gorloks got off to a great start in the game as they rallied for five runs, including a three-run homerun from
Charlie Burton (6), in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead. They added two more runs in the bottom of the second and held a 7-0 advantage heading into the third. The Red Devils were able to score a run in the top of the third, but two runs from Webster in the bottom of the fourth extended the Gorloks lead to 9-1. Webster would go one to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth, one run in the bottom of the sixth, three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and two runs in the bottom of the eighth to solidify the win.
Deven Shulstad (6-1) got the start for the Gorloks as he allowed just seven hits and one earned run while striking out six in 7.0 innings.
Mason Young pitched in relief as he did not allow a hit while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game.
Webster rallied for 27 hits in the game.
Charlie Burton led the way for Webster as he went 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun and six RBI.
Ben Swords and Nathaniel Martine also played well as Swords went 5-for-5 with four RBI while Martinez went 4-for-4 with three RBI. In addition,
Evan Evola went 2-for-5 with an RBI and
Mitch Daniels went 3-for-4 with two RBI while
Dylan Coleman finished with two RBI,
Sam Turilli added an RBI, and
Parker Wielt recorded an RBI.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond tomorrow, May 12
th when they continue play in the SLIAC Baseball Tournament. They will play Spalding (Ky.) University at 2:30 p.m. at Carshield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
