The Webster University men's soccer team kicked off their season this evening when they took on Maryville (Tenn.) College for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Scots by a final score of 4-2 to improve to 1-0 on the season. The win marks the first career win for Nenad Curic.
Webster was outshot 18-12 in the contest with seven shots on target compared to eight from the Scots. Maryville also led in the corner count as they finished with 11 compared to three from the Gorloks.
The Gorloks got off to a great start in the match as they earned a penalty kick in the 24
th minute of the game.
Amar Mujezinovic took the penalty for Webster and buried his shot to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks added to their lead in the 35
th minute as
Talha Dizdarevic blasted a free kick from just outside of the box into the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0. The Scots would get one back before the end of the half and Webster would take a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Webster earned their second penalty of the game just two minutes into the period. Dizdarevic took the penalty and was able to finish off his second of the game to extend the lead to 3-1. Maryville answered back with a goal in the 62
nd minute, but Webster would add a third penalty in the 87
th minute to solidify the win. Dizdarevic scored the penalty for Webster to record his first career hat trick.
Luke Dillon (1-0) was in goal for Webster as he recorded six saves in his first win of the season.
The Gorloks will be back in action on Sunday, September 3
rd when they host the Dominican (Ill.) University Stars for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to kick off at 1 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
