Gorloks Score in Final Minute to Defeat Beloit

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Beloit (Wis.) College Buccaneers for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Bucs by a final score of 1-0 to improve to 3-2 on the season. With the loss, Beloit drops to 1-4 on the season.

The Gorloks outshot the Buccaneers by a final count of 15-5 and put 10 shots on target compared to one from Beloit. Webster also led in the corner count as they had six while the Bucs finished with four.

Webster came out in the first half of the game and took it to the Buccaneers early. They controlled the possession for most of the first half but were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances. Their best chance of the half came in the 30th minute when Grace Rodgers was on a breakaway before getting taken down by the Beloit keeper outside of the box. The keeper earned a red card for the tackle and the Bucs were forced to play a woman down the rest of the game. Despite being down a player, Beloit was able to keep Webster out of the back of the net and the game remained scoreless at the break.

The Gorloks continued to control the possession in a physical second half but had a tough time finishing their chances. They were finally able to break into the scoring column in the final minute of the game as Abbey Poe was able to settle a clearance from the Beloit defense and place her shot into the top left corner for her first tally of the season. Webster did not let the Bucs have any possession at the end of the game as they closed them out in the final minute to solidify the win.

Courtney Haneline (3-2) was in goal for the Gorloks as she recorded one save in her first career solo shutout.

The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 20th when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) Fightin' Engineers for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. EST.
