Gorloks Outlast Griffins in Five Sets

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University volleyball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins in five sets (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 14-25, 15-9) to move to 4-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. With the loss, Fontbonne drops to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks finished with 52 kills on 180 attacks for a .167 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, five blocks, 99 digs, and 46 assists. The Griffins ended with 51 kills on 197 attacks for a .096 attacking percentage.

Webster came out in the first set of the match and jumped out to an early 7-3 lead before forcing the Griffins to call a timeout. The Gorloks continued to play well as the set progressed and grew their lead to 13-5 midway through the game. The Griffins would battle back and cut the lead to three, but Webster was able to close them out down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Webster carried their momentum over into the second game as they jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the set. The Griffins would cut the lead to 17-15 midway through the game, but an 8-4 run from the Gorloks to end the game gave Webster a 2-0 match lead.

After dropping the third and fourth sets, the Gorloks came out in the fifth set and did their best to swing the momentum back into their favor. They started the set on a 7-5 run and held a 10-7 advantage midway through the game. The Griffins would cut the lead to five, but Webster would pick up the final points of the set to solidify the match.

Tyler Ramstack and Megan Zablonski led the attack for the Gorloks as they both recorded 11 kills in the match. Delaney Demman also played a great game as she finished with a team high 19 assists to go along with 20 digs. In addition, Ellie Biedenstein finished with 16 assists while Lauren Borik recorded a match high 31 digs.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, September 30th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to compete in a SLIAC tri-match. Webster will take on Lyon (Ark.) College at 12 p.m. and Eureka (Ill.) College at 2 p.m. with both matches taking place at Eureka College.
