EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University women's volleyball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Eureka, Illinois, to take on Lyon (Ark.) College and Eureka (Ill.) College for a SLIAC tri-match. The Gorloks picked up a pair of wins as they defeated Lyon in four sets (25-17, 25-20, 27-29, 28-26) and Eureka in three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-14) to improve to 6-9 on the season and 4-1 in SLIAC play.
In their first match of the day, Webster finished with 48 kills on 168 attacks for a .179 attacking percentage. They added eight service aces, 10 total blocks, 42 assists, and 75 digs. The Scots finished with 41 kills on 156 attacks for a .109 attacking percentage.
The Gorloks came out in the first set of the match and jumped out to a 16-7 lead early in the game. The Scots would cut the lead to six, but Webster would close them out down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second set and held an 11-7 advantage early. The Scots would stay just a couple points behind for most of the game but the Gorloks would hold an 18-20 lead late. They would finish the second set on a 5-2 run and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping a highly competitive third set by a final score of 29-27, Webster came out in the fourth set and held a 10-7 early lead. The Scots would cut the lead to one, but another run from Webster would put them up four late in the game. Despite being down, Lyon College continued to battle down the stretch and were able to tie the score at 24. However, the Gorloks outscored the Scots 4-2 in the final rallies to solidify the win.
Grace White and
Olivia Powell led the way for Webster as they both finished with 10 kills. Powell also played well defensively as she recorded a team high four blocks.
Delaney Demman and
Ellie Biedenstein ran the attack for the Gorloks as Demman finished with a team high 22 assists to go along with 10 digs while Biedenstein recorded 14 assists.
Lauren Borik led the team defensively with 22 digs.
In their second match of the day, Webster finished with 33 kills on 117 attacks from a .171 attacking percentage. They added 12 service aces, 47 digs, 30 assists, and three total blocks. The Red Devils finished with 22 kills on 103 attacks for a .019 attacking percentage.
The Gorloks came out in the first set against the Red Devils and jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. Eureka quickly tied the score at seven, and then went on a 5-3 run to take a 12-10 advantage in the set. The Gorloks would answer with a 10-4 run of their own and then closed out the Red Devils down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Webster struggled to start as the Red Devils jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Webster answered back and tied the score at 11, and then went on an 8-2 run to take a 19-13 lead in the set. They would pick up the final points of the game and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Webster carried over their momentum into the third set and jumped out to a 7-3 advantage. The Red Devils cut the lead to two, but an 8-2 run from the Gorloks would put them up 18-10 in the game. Webster never let the Red Devils back in the set and cruised to the three-set sweep.
Madison Katz led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team high eight kills.
Delaney Demman also played a great game as she finished with a team high 14 assists and a team high four service aces. In addition,
Ellie Biedenstein finished with 11 assists and 12 digs,
Jessie Leach finished with 12 digs, and
Lauren Borik added three service aces for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, October 4
th when they host the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
